Lois Koritz Hopfenberg, 96, beloved “Queen of Hearts,” died peacefully on Oct. 16, following a short illness. A dynamic force of nature, Lois had a zest for life, a generous heart and the ability to make people feel loved. She was loved by many, and her presence made the world a brighter and a more entertaining place.

Born to Dora and Henry Koritz, Lois lost both parents at a young age and was lovingly raised by her two aunts, Mary and Jennie Dembofsky. She grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts, graduated from Syracuse University and later earned her Master of Education degree from Rhode Island College.

Lois devoted 30 years to teaching, touching countless young lives as a beloved kindergarten and Head Start teacher in Providence. In retirement she moved to Hunters Run in Boynton Beach, Florida, where she honed her golf, tennis and bridge skills. Never one to sit still for long, she embarked on a second career that perfectly captured her adventurous spirit. For 20 years and over 100 voyages, she traveled the world as a bridge instructor aboard various cruise ships, sharing her love of the game while making friends and exploring the world wherever she went.

Above all, Lois cherished her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence Hopfenberg of Providence. She was the proud mother of David and his wife, Trish, of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Bobby and her husband, Jeff Morgenstern, of Wellesley, Massachusetts. Lois’s greatest joy was being a grandmother to Leah; Max; Harrison and his wife, Michelle; and Alexandra, who brought immeasurable love and happiness to her life.

Lois lived with energy, enthusiasm, curiosity and an unmistakable spirit. She embraced life fully, treasured her friendships, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her warmth, humor, strength and boundless love will remain in the hearts of her family and the many friends whose lives she enriched.

Donations in Lois's memory could be made to the Lawrence Hopfenberg memorial fund at Jewish Alliance of Rhode Island.
